This is the last week of red for the Rainbow Challenge. This 9 inch block is titled Towers of Camelot which I found in the magazine 50 Best Blocks 2004. I actually found a number of awesome blocks in that magazine. Every piece in this block are scraps that I had on hand. I can't wait to see what the color is for Feb. this year.

The cost of quilting-Part 2...

Yesterday I mentioned the cost of quilting and said today I would share with how I'm cutting the costs so that I can continue to quilting long into my golden years.    I want to still be quilting when I'm 90!!
I have 5 quilting stores, all within 10 minutes of me and 2 fabric stores.

- instead of 100% loyalty at one quilting store, I will shop at all 5.   This month one store is having $5 bag sales of scrap pieces of material.   I'll buy some from her.    Then I'll go over to another store that is having great sales on fat quarters.
- I plan on putting aside a specific amount of $$ so that when sales come up at the quilting stores I'll be able to add to my stash
- I'll buy my batting at one of the fabric stores because she gives me 20% off.   I'll also ask this store if she will give me 20% off my flannel.
- when flannelette comes on sale, I'll purcahse a large quantity.   This one is a toughie because the fabric store that puts flannelette on sale at 50% off has a horrible choice of flannelette!!
- ABSOLUTELY no waste of material.    Even when it cups to cutting, I'll be more careful so that there is no waste.    The tiniest of pieces will be put into quilts.
- Except for the 2 queen size quilts I'm working on, only single and baby quilts will be made.
- My quilts will get scrappier and scrappier (good thing I love scrappy quilts).    I love string quilts and now that I know how to make the crumb blocks, I'll make more of those.
- although I would like to purchase some of the new gadgets that have come on the market for quilters, I will not purchase them.    I'll keep to my trustie tools that I have now.

- I've seen some awesome quilts made with men's old 100% cotton shirts.    Recently while in a thrift store, I seen some nurse's scrubs that were 100% cotton with the cutest of patterns.    I plan on watching for sale days at thrift stores and purchasing more shirts along with the scrubs.

The cost of quilting - Part 1...

The cost of quilting is getting absolutely scarey.    I'm frugal to the core and want to keep quilting long into my golden years, however I'm having to make some major changes when it comes to quilting.

Here are the breakdowns of the cost of material where I live:
- flannelette is now $9.00 a metre
- quilting flannel..between $14.95 - 17.95 metre
- 100% cotton...anywhere between $14.95 - 21.95 metre
- the type of batting that I use....$9.99 a metre

And the costs continue to rise.    In fact, I was talking to a quilting store owner and she was saying some the material being sold now to quilting stores is poly/cotton because of the cost.    I'm a cotton gal through and through...I don't want to have to use poly/cotton material in my quilts.   Quilting stores are closing because the costs of material have gotten so high that quilters just can't afford to keep quilting.    Personally I think as a quilter, we can continue.    We just need to be more frugal.

This same owner told me that many quilters have switched to making pillowcases, purses and smaller items, such as wall hangings and placemats.    I don't want to be making wall hangings (how many can you truly put on your all) and how many placemats can you use.    My dream is to continue to make quilts for charity, for little ones that need them. Tomorrow I'll share how I'm becoming more and more frugal in regards to purchasing quilting supplies.

Book review

And certainly not in the home of Nathaniel and Lewis Upchurch--both former suitors.

As she fumbles through the firsst real work of her life, Margaret struggles to keep her identity secret when suspicions arise and prying eyes visit Fairbourne Hall.   Can she avoid a trap meant to force her from hiding?

Julie has another winner on her hands.   I love historical fiction and Julie is one of the best when it comes to history facts and great storylines.   I learnt so much about servants during the 1815 time frame.   A romance story, this story also has danger and one of the characters you want to throttle!! I really enjoyed how Klassen took Margaret from a spoilt high society young lady and changed her to a strong and compassionate woman. Margaret admits to learning many of her faults while serving as a servant. In her words I learnt that my long lists of faults includes the tendency to judge people by first appearances and to judge wrongly. I felt the author definitely showed this throughout the book and at the end of the book when Margaret tells her sister looks can be deceiving she knows what she is talking about.

I found the relationship between the two brothers very interesting in this book.  The younger brother so different from the older, with so much more character than the oldest one ever had.   At times I was quiet disappointed in the sister's reaction to each brother which Klassen is so great at.   I HIGHLY recommend this book.   I loved it!!

Red still...

It's another block for the Rainbow Challenge. Red is the color for January. Every piece of fabric in this block were scrappy pieces. I love when I can do that. As per mentioned last week, I'm going to try making a block a week and then put them together in two quilts at the end of the year. Should be interesting to see how the colors come together and will be a whole lot of fun. Actually that's what quilting is truly all about...having fun. Book review...

WOW!!! A good author is one who draws the reader into their book from the first page and keeps them there until the very last page, ever on their edge wondering the outcome.   As well, the author brings the characters to life where the reader can totally relate to them and their lives. Camden is such an author.   I couldn't put this book down and could so relate to the characters throughout the book.

Even though there is mystery and intrigue, characters who come alive and history, this book's theme is definitely about differences found in people throughout our lives.   Libby who is illiterate and went through ridicule throughout school, Michael who is a foreigner with totally different ways, children who are called gypsies and Mirela who went through a very traumatic experience during the war years.    I felt the author did an amazing job in showing this throughout the pages of the book.   I loved how Camden portrayed each character, some strong and compassionate, some like the Professor, eccentric in his ways and yet each carrying their own storyline and making this the incredible book it is.   Because of this book, I'm ordering her first book The Lady of Bolden Hill.    I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Here is another quilt I finished this past week. I finally used up the little squares that I had been given off a panel. I used red strips, again scraps from the scrappy bags that I had purchased for $5. I used a dark navy for the outside of the blocks and then a really cute material I had purchased before Christmas. This types of quilts are fun, easy and quick to make.

These are the types of books I thoroughly enjoy reading, however this one didn't quite peak my interest like other financial books do. It is a good read, just not the best I've read on controlling your finances. I do wish I had a book like this in my hands years ago when we had gotten ourselves so far into debt. No longer in debt of any kind, I do agree 100% with the majority of what she says. I felt the author shares some very sound advice in regards to finances, however it is quite similar to other books she has written. For those who purchase this book, she is offering a free membership to Debt Proof Living which has a wealth of information. I'd recommend this book for all to read.

Quilting is fun when...

Quilting can be fun when:
- we don't try to compete with other quilters.    Quilting shouldn't be a competition, trying to make better quilts or more quilts that the next quilter.   Quilters should just be friends.
- when we don't worry about our mistakes.    A good carpentar can cover up his mistakes, so can a good quilter.   I had a wonderful quilting teacher about 20 years ago who said "we don't make mistakes...there is always a way to fix something".    Isn't that profound.    Why sweat about making a mistake when we can fix it!!
- eat chocolate while quilting.
- when we pass on the art of quilting to others.   Why keep our experiences or quilting tips we've learnt along the way to ourself.
- when we compliment other quilters, no matter how their quilting looks.    THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING NICE TO SAY ABOUT A QUILT OR THE QUILTER'S EFFORT!!!   No quilter is perfect in their quilting.
- when we can laugh about our mistakes or our color choices
- when our family or friends don't take second place to our quilting.   (Along with our faithwalk.)   Quilt when you can and don't worry about making hundreds of quilts.   That's not the most important part of quilting.   It's making the quilts we can with the time we have.
- when we can feel no quilt when we only make a table runner or a small quilt.   When we can get joy out of making small rather than always large.   There is beauty in the small too!!
- when we can GIVE OUR QUILTS AWAY.

This month's color is red and although I don't have many red scraps, I did manage to find some that I had purchased in the $5 bags. Life on Windmill Farm hasn't been the same since Julia Lapp's father has had trouble with his heart.   But that doesn't stop Julie from hoping for a bright future.   She has planned on marrying Paul Fisher since she was a girl.   Now twenty-one, she looks forward to their wedding with giddy anticipation.   But when Paul tells her he wants to postpone the wedding--again--she is determined to change his mind.   She knows who is to blame for Paul's sudden reluctance to wed: the Bee Man.

Roman Troyer, the Bee Man, travels through the Amish communities of Ohio and Pennsylvania with his hives full of bees, renting them out to farmers in need of pollinators.   A mysterious man who relishes his nomadic life, Roman especially enjoys bringing his bees to Stoney Ridge each year.   But with Julia seriously at odds with him, Windmill Farm is looking decidedly less appealing.

Can Julia secure the future she's always dreamed of?   Or does God have something else in store for her?

Every book that Suzanne writes gets better.   She definitely has another hit on her hands with this one.   I loved it!!   With this genre becoming so popular, I've found many of the Amish books are somewhat similiar in their storylines.  This one is definitely different and a "keeper".   From Paul who is a mamma's boy to the mysterious Bee Man.   From Menno who is a special gift, Fern who is bossy to Julia who is strong, each character has their own strengths within the book.   However M.K. made the book.   She is quite the little character and had me laughing often. (In fact, I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see what happens to her.)  I felt the author did an excellant job in keeping the reader interested in each of her characters, no matter who they were.

Not only a love story, Suzanne also deals with heart issues, both spiritual and physical.  I loved how she did all so well, especially the heart transplant issue.  I also learnt a ton about bee keeping.   I'd highly recommend this book to anyone.

Book review...

I have to be honest here, this is not the type of book I would normally read. However I did find it informative and I felt the authors were very honest in sharing their lives with the reader, expecially when it came to Grace. Although I didn't agree with all that was said in the book, I feel it's a book that most would enjoy reading. There is much to learn from Mark and Grace's story in this book.

I loved the last chapter Reverse Engineering Your Life and Marriage. The questions pertaining to principles, plans, rhythms, priorities, the future and making changes are awesome and very thought provoking. The questions will take lots of thought and yet if answered honestly will definitely make a difference in our lives. A good read!!

Organized quilting...Part 2

One of the biggest things I did when I decided to get organized was color co-ordinate my material and have it all in one spot. When I know which quilt I'm going to make, I can immediately go to my material cupboard and pick my material. It saves so much time.

I have two folding tables. This is my cutting table which sits in my living room. I don't have a choice has to where it goes, I just don't have any other space. It can be folded up if I need the room for company. I keep very little on it so that when I'm ready to cut I don't have to clean it up. I also use this table for pinning the quilt tops when they are ready to be quilted.

My sewing machine table sits in a small corner, again in my living room. I keep this table clean. When I'm finished quilting, I put everything away. Again, it means that I'm not having to move stuff continually when I have time to quilt. I also keep it clean because it's in the living room. The neat thing about this is that my sewing machine is always set up. I don't have to take the time to set it up everytime I want to quilt. I keep a couple bobbins filled with thread too so that I don't have to thread the bobbins all the time. (Right now I only have one bobbin filled because I broke a couple. I have to order more.) You'll also save time if you basically use only one or two colors of thread. Always have thread on hand, saves you having to run to the store to purchase more.

I bought this little cabinet at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store in our city. All my scraps are strored in it. I know exactly where to go to find my scrappy pieces.

Here is where I save the most time. I take one day and cut. The strips and square in this picture will become a toddler's quilt. Because we learnt there was another quilting store in our city yesterday, I didn't get all the strips cut. I'll finish those today. The bottom picture are 6 and 5 inch squares. I know which quilt I'll be making, so while I was cutting the strips above, I cut the squares as well. I normally have 2 or 3 quilt tops cut and ready to sew at any one time. You'll save tons of time doing this. It's one of the best things I learnt years ago. I also found making simple quilt patterns saves me a whole lot of time.

Let me finish by saying something about the internet (and tv which we don't own). You can spend hours and hours on the internet especially going from one site to another. Hours where you could be quilting. We spend no more than one hour per day on the internet (I share my computer with hubby). Friday at 10:00 a.m. our computer goes off and it doesn't go back on until Mon. morning unless there is a challenge that I'm participating in that takes place on a Sat. Of all the things I've done to organize so I can make more quilts (and spend more time with my family) this has got to be the ABSOLUTE BEST!! No doubt about it.

Organized quilting...Part 1

I've been asked how I can get so many quilts made so I thought I would share how I do it.   Because I treat my quilting as a job which I love and I'm passionate about, it's quite easy for me.   Organizing doesn't come easy for me, however I realized a couple of years ago that if I wanted to make quilts and make lots of them that I'd have to become organized.

Here's what I do:
- I have a to do list that I write out each night.   I fill the list out a few days in advance has well if I know there are specific things to do for that day.
- I volunteer 15 hours a week, no more.    C and me had been volunteering at the local Humane Society however it was adding to those 15 hours along with taking away from family time, so we quit.
- I don't quilt on Sundays or evenings.   Sundays are for church and scrapbooking with C in the afternoon.   Evenings are for my family...we watch movies, play games or read.   I've had to be very careful that quilting didn't become more important than my family or my God.
- I cut my hours on the computer BIGTIME.    I'm not on Facebook or Twitter and seldom will you find me texting.    You also won't find me spening hours on the phone.   I have a specific amount of blogs I follow and no more.
- we downsized BIGTIME to a small mobile home.   C is responsible for her own room so all I have to clean is the bathroom, our bedroom, living room and kitchen.    We have very little furniture and I don't have many trinkets or gadgets.   I've never been much of a trinket girl.   The ones I treasure are in a cupboard that had glass doors that I can enjoy yet don't have to dust continually.
- I cook everything from scratch, however I use my crockpot 90% of the time.   I also usually make double so that I have enough leftover for the next day and don't have to cook on that day.

A year of giving...

I really felt I wanted to make this year of extreme giving, one where we can bless a number of organizations. We prayed has a family for a specific number. We came up with the number and have picked seven places to give to this coming year. I'm not going to mention the number here, however we've written it down as one of our goals for 2012.

- Reeece's Rainbow
- socks to Stre*ts Alive
- to our two local foodbanks
- quilts
- to Not4Sale
- chickens to Compassion Cda come Christmas

I'm excited to see if we can meet the number by the end of 2012. It certainly is a challenge although if anyone knows me, they know I love a good challenge. As the year progresses I'll update.

One more quilt top...

I finished this quilt top on Boxing Day. The little squares have baby bottles and soothers along with the words burp, slurp and gulp. The other material I already had on hand. I made two of these. Both will be donated to the local foodbank which hands out baby quilts at the end of each month to those who are expecting that visit the foodbank. This pattern was found at McCall's Quilting. I've made a couple before and had so much fun making them. I'll be making more of these later in the year.

A son's gentle touch...

As many of you know, our M has Down Syndrome. M was definitely a challenge with no speech, not toilet trained (still isn't completely trained) and prone to very violent tantrums. Two years ago he moved to a residential home where he has done exceptionally well. He still presents many of these challenges, however of the two boys, he has done the best.

I made him a Log Cabin quilt for Christmas. Here is part of an e-mail I received from his housemom on Boxing Day, in regards to that quilt. I was not working yesterday morning when M opened his gift from you, but it was reported to me that he got a big smile on his face and went immediately to his room to place the quilt on his bed. Last night when I put him to bed, he kept running his hand over it in a petting motion...so I would say he is extremely pleased!!! As I read this my heart was so touched by this son's gentle touch. I bawled like a baby and yet realized that he knew...he knew that his mom loved him through this quilt.

Book Review

Although a well written book I felt this book wasn't quite up to par with Courageous Living and The Resolution of Men, both books in this series of three and books I've reviewed in the past few days. It will definitely be a book that I return to again, when I have more time to take one chapter at a time and really study it. Because there is so much to digest within the book, I've done much underlining so that when I go back I can see what really jumped out at me as I read.

Some of the chapters in the book are:

Surprisingly satisfied...a resolution to be content
authentically me...a resolution to value myself and celebrate others
my best...a resolution to devote myself completely to God's priorities for my life
my integrity...a resolution to live with the highest stands of virtue and purity
and more...

Just as in The resolution of Men, the Resolution for women is printed at the beginning and the end of the book. At the end of each chapter , thought provoking questions are asked. A number of things I found really interesting were:

the affirmation statements that are taken directly from the Word. There are five pages of them.
the inventory of the tongue's track record, both the symptoms and the diagnosis.
the "14 Challenge". I loved this one and plan on implementing it in my life beginning in the new year.

I would recommend this book to all women as well as having one of these books in your church library. I would HIGHLY recommend that all three books be purchased for your home and church library.

The year in review...

It's been a busy year, one filled with change, challenges, tears and laughter.   Along with that much travel.

-The first part of the year, we finished renovating our old Victorian home. It had taken a number of years to get it completed. Finally it was done and put on the market in April.
-April we sold our home with possession date May 31st.
-May we travelled to northern B.C. and surprised one of our sons and his family.   We met his beautiful fiance and her daughter.
-June 1st. found us travelling once again to northern B.C. where we lived in a small camper for 1 month.   That in itself was quite a challenge, however we learnt we could live without a whole lot of "stuff".
-July 4 we moved to our present home in beautiful Alberta. Purchasing an older mobile home definitely challenged us.   We also went from 1500 sq. ft. to 875 sq. ft.   Yet again we found we have enough room although I would love to have my own sewing room.    That's a want though and definitely not a need.   We've learnt to simplify and love it.
-Aug. brought a cancer scare.   Yet again, our God was faithful and the results ....clear and no cancer.
-Sept. 4th my mother passed away.
-Sept. 5th hubby broke his ankle which still has not healed.
-Oct., Nov., were pretty quiet compared to the above.   We all started volunteering, I got back into quilting fulltime, making and donating the quilts to charity within our city and we continued to experience all that our province has to offer.
-Dec. 18, a dear aunt passed away.
-Dec. 25, we celebrated a quiet Christmas.

What will 2012 bring.   Non of us knows, yet I know there will be challenges, triumphs, tears and laughter and more travelling.   There will be more volunteering, more charity quilts made and more healthy living.   Through it all, God will be our strength and the Source we go to each day.   I can't wait to see what the new year brings.

As a woman I thought it would be difficult to read, yet I found much of what they say could pertain to most every one. However this truly is written specificially for men. I particularly loved "The Resolution", both at the front of the book and the back of the book.

I really liked the seven attributes that are found in scripture that define true manhood and how they were explained in the book. Another area that really jumped out at me were the 10 locks that make prayer ineffective and the 10 keys to making prayer effective. The authors main purpose to writing the book was to join God in turning the hearts of fathers back to their children and the hearts of children back to their fathers. I felt their have explained that well in this book. They've also challenged the men to become chain breakers, prayer warriors, justice fighters and spiritual mentors, all of which are explained well too.

This is another book I would HIGHLY recommend to men and for churches to have it in their library. Ladies, there is also The Revolution for Woman (review coming next). Why not purchase both for your family library. I can't wait to see the movie!!

WOW!!! What a powerful book. There is just so much in this book that it should be reading for EVERY family in this coming year. Michael talks about needing men with the hearts of a warrior. (I love that!) He talks about dreaming big and how so many are lulled into settling for average rather than best. In one chapter he shares how we should be choosing the best and rejecting anything less. One chapter is all about needing leaders and heroes and that honor begins at home.

I really enjoyed how Catt incorporated different heroes from the Bible into each chapter. He also wrote in such a way that anyone who reads the book will understand what he is sharing. The quotes written in this book by others are profound.

Another quilt...

This quilt was so fun to make. I had been given a panel from Kickass Quilting Store before we moved. I cut out the squares and then used 2 1/2 in squares and 2 1/2 in. strips to go around the pictures. It didn't take long to do. The red border was material I had gotten in the $5 bags I had bought at the quilting store here. (Unfortunately they do not have a website.) I plan on making another one of these using similar material in the next few weeks. This one will be quilted shortly and donated to charity.

Like fine wine that only improves with age, Tamera's books continue getting better and better with each new book.  Liz Curtis Higgs said "Tamera Alexander paints vivid scenes, not with oils on canvas but with words on the page..."   I totally agree.   I felt like I was at the Belmont Mansion as I turned page after page.   I could see every room, picture the opulence of this incredible home. In my mind's eye I could imagine every piece of art work that Mrs. Acklens purchased along with her appreciation of each one. She was quite a strong character, rich and determined to sell her cotton during the civil war.   Of all the characters, I was drawn to her the most.

Sutton always suspicious and rightfully so of Claire. Along with Sutton, so was Mr. Holbrook. Both lawyers, you could totally agree with their actions.   Each a strong character, in fact I felt that most of the characters in the story had strong personalities, something I truly enjoy in a book.   Even the head housekeeper was a tough cookie and yet soften at the end.

There are great lessons to be learnt throughout this book.   Lessons on telling the truth, lessons on always being careful as to whose looking at your life.   This book comes HIGHLY recommended by me.   And don't you just love the dress on the cover!!

Strings and crumbs...

Although I've been busy with volunteering and such, I've been making time for quilting everyday. Here is another string quilt. I love doing these. I wanted a border and didn't have the type of material I wanted, however I did have a number of crumb blocks so used them. I love how it turned out. I'll be quilting this in the new year and it will be going to charity.

Elizabeth's poetry and her mother's stirring storytelling combine in this inspirational book to proclaim that there is always a reason to take the next step---with hope.

"We refuse to let our circumstances dictate our destiny.   We see each new day as an opportunity to move our lives forward.   We celebrate our victories, big and small.   We pray for the strength to continue to battle."   These words say it all when it comes to the depth of this book.   A wonderfully written book that had me smiling and at times in tears. Having a son with autism, I could so relate to every word spoken.

Elizabeth shares her feelings in such a profund way in her poetry.   You can feel what she is feeling, you can almost feel her heartbeat in some of her work.  She wants those who read her poetry to learn who she is.

Virginia shares going through what most parents go through when they have children who have disabilites...from pleading for services, trying every new medical theory out there, from IEP's and the emotional roller coasters.    She also shares how she has learned so many lessons from Elizabeth, just as we all do through our incredible kids. I loved how she shared these profound words "she is teaching me to slow down, to appreciate the beauty in nature and to be more patient".   Doesn't that just grip you and want you to go out and purchase this incredible book, whether your child has autism or not.   I HIGHLY recommend this book.

"Others see them with their eyes, I see them with my heart".   We who advocate for these precious kids see them with our hearts.   We don't see their disabilities, we see their abilities.   We see them as wonderful kids who will challenge us and yet make us who we are today.    They will give more in their lifetime than we ever will. When Cassie Lockwood's mother died, Cassie began traveling with her father's Wild West Show. When her father passed away, she continued to work with the show, having nowhere else to go.
Now Cassie has discovered that "Uncle" Jason, the show's manager, has driven the show into debt, and he's absconded with what little money is left.   Devastated, Cassie decides to try to find the hidden valley in the Black Hills of South Dakota where her father had dreamed of setting down roots.   She has only one clue. She needs to find three huge stones that look like fingers on a giant hand.   With Chief, a Sioux Indian who's been with the act for twenty years, and Micah, the head wrangler, she leaves the show and a bundle of heartache behind and begins a wild and daring adventure.

Snelling is one of my favorite authors and I'm so excited to see that she has gone back to the Dakotas again.   Many of her older books were about the Dakotas and I loved them.   I liked this book and thoroughly enjoyed how Cassie became such a strong character throughout the book, going from having everything done for her while she worked with the Wild West Show to having to learn to do everything herself on her adventure to find the illusive valley her Father so often talked about.   There were so many changes for her along the route.   Runs like a Deer was also a strong character and I can't wait to see what the future holds for her in the second book of this series, Wild West Winds.   Both Ransom and Lucas were strong in their own ways although I think Lucas was the stronger of the two men.

If I have anything negative to say about the book, it would have to be the ending.   I found it weak and although I realize there will be more books in the series, I felt the ending was very abrupt.   It definitely is a cliff hanger ending though, making one wanting to read the next book in the series soon.    A great read!!

A Legacy...

It's been three months since the passing of my mom and I missed her more today than I did then.    However, in reading a book over the past couple of days I realized she left me a gift, a wonderful legacy to carry throughout the remainder of my life.

- her faith....it never waivered even though she had many struggles in life.
- her commitment to my dad even though he wasn't an easy man to live with.
- her commitment to her kids even though they gave her much grief (myself included).   She showered us with unconditional love throughout our lives.
- her compassion for others, her giving spirit showered on her family and strangers was a wonderful example to all.
- her determination to live life to the fullest, even while in a nursing home.
- her work ethic.    Although my mom never worked a day of her life outside her home, her work ethic within her home was an inspiration to all who new her.
- her integrity
- her contentment even while living in the nursing home she was content to watch the birds and the deer that strolled through the fields outside her window.

A wonderful legacy she left each of her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.   An example for all of us to follow.    The book I'm reading is Becoming a Better You by Joel Osteen.   I'm so glad I found it at the library because it made me even more thankful for my mom and the gift she left me.

One of the best ways to get to know God on a deeper level is to know His names and titles as revealed in Scripture.   Now the bestselling author of Praying the Names of God and Praying the Names of Jesus uncovers the richness of God's character and love found in His names right within the Bible text.

When we we asked if we wanted to do a review of this Bible, I jumped at the chance. I was so excited and rightfully so. It has a wealth of information in regards to the names of God, something I've wanted to study for a long time.

The beginning of the book has a list of the names and titles of God along with the prounciation guide. I love how the translation includes the most significant names of God in Hebrew, and all highlighted in red throughout the verses for easy finding. Each book has an introduction and then the key names of God.    At the back of the book is a Topical Prayer Guide for the names of God plus a reading guide.

This is definitely a study Bible with a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the names of God.   I highly recommend it, especially if used with other Bibles as a study guide.

Our tenth grandchild was born on Thursday this past week, weighing in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. His name is Kurtis and will probably be our last grandchild. Counting we now have 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren (twin boys). And I have to tell you, grandchildren are the best!!! We hope to meet him June, 2012. I can't wait.

"Growing old has been the greatest surprise of my life," says Billy Graham, known by many as God's Ambassador.   "I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I know that as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the last mile of the way."

What a profound and powerful book. Billy Graham says "I have been taught all of my life how to die, but no one had ever taught me how to grow old".   He does that in this book and does it well.

Some of the chapters in the book:
- Don't retire from life
- Consider the golden years
- Fading Strength but standing strong
- Influencing the impressionable
- Then and now

He talks about retiring and finding the key to make it work. He talks about sharing wisdom with the younger generation, shares about planning for the future and mastering your money. He talks about having a will, about making out a living will and more!!

He shares about how he fought growing old and how he had to learn to be content.   I love how he summaraized in one word changes that comes over us as we age....that word being decline. It explains aging well.    I felt he did a wonderful job explaining that Heaven is our hope, our future and our final home. Closing in on 93 years old, Billy Graham has left us with a wonderful book.   I would HIGHLY recommend everyone read it.

Cacoons...

How often have you found yourself in a cacoon, where you are very comfortable with staying at home, reading the same type books, having the same friends and acquaintances.    That's where I found myself before we moved here.   I preferred staying at home, visiting with a couple of friends and always reading the same type of fiction books.    I even found myself very comfortable where I was at in my quilting and right down to my scrapbooking.    I didn't feel comfortable venturing out in new areas.   In other words, I didn't want to stretch myself too much because of the discomfort.

Then God moved us here.    To a new church where our pastor stretches us into seeing the Bible in new and profound ways.   To a Bible class that has us looking a Life Goals along with our gifts.   To not knowing anyone here, to volunteering where I've never volunteered before.   The stretching has been scary and yet awesome in so many ways.    Now I'm mixing with professionals volunteering at the local hospital as library assistant, volunteering at the local food bank where I'm touching hands with the poorest of the poor in our city and even volunteering at the humane society.

Along with that, I set some goals back in Sept. and one of them was to read biographies of great men and woman.   Stretching myself even further, I'm now reading books about other countries and places in our world, more non-fiction books than I've ever read.    It feels so good to be stretching myself, to opening my wings up a bit at a time and exploring my world in new and profound ways.   I'm loving it.

And when it comes to quilting, I've now found that I thoroughly enjoy hand applique and come spring I will be taking advanced quilting class on something I've never done before, stretching myself even here.   It's been fun!!

My dream - part 2...

Since the fall of 2005, I've been making quilts for the North.   Quilts that went to children on the reserves in the the province I lived in at the time.    I never got to meet the children or their families.   I always had someone distributing them for me and although I did get pictures I would have loved to have seen some of the children getting their quilts.
Then we moved to a different province, to a city that has a high First Nations population and yet I didn't know where my quilting was going to go.   When the Welcome Wagon consultant visited our home back in late July, she gave us a book titled Getting Connected.   I read it from cover to cover and repeatedly kept coming back to one organization...one that worked with Aboriginal peoples within our city.

With the cancer scare, my mom's passing and hubby breaking his ankle, I put the "giving" part of quilts aside except for the quilt I gave to the stranger with cancer.    Although I found such peace in making the quilts, I was still missing the part where I donated my quilts to charity.    When I picked up the Getting Connected book recently I was immediately drawn to one organization...the same one I had been drawn to all along.    I made the call and talked to a wonderful lady who said that yes they could definitely use quilts and the next time I was in their vicinity to drop in and meet them.    That I did on Tues. and was delighted to meet the family co-ordinator and most of the employees of this organization.   The neatest part...this group works with CFS and that's exactly who I wanted my quilts to go to.   I'm now working on getting as many quilts done has I can before Christmas.   The need is great!!

Alice Grace Ripley lives in a dream world, her nose stuck in a book.   But the happily-ever-after life she's planned on suddenly falls apart when her boyfriend breaks up with her, accusing her of living in a world of fiction instead of the real one.   To top it off, Alice loses her beloved library job because of cutbacks due to the Great Depression.

Longing to run from small-town gossip, Alice flees to the mountains of eastern Kentucky to deliver five boxes of donated books to the tiny coal-mining town of Acorn, a place with no running water, no electricity, and where the librarians ride ornery horses up steep mountain passes to deliver books.   When Alice is forced to stay in Acorn far longer than she planned, she discovers that real-life adventure mystery--and especially romance--may be far better than her humble dreams could have imagined.

I love how Austin continues to put out awesome books.   There hasn't been one that I haven't enjoyed and this is another one.   A true winner!! Strong characters and a wonderful story line make this book what it is.   I loved how Alice digs right in and learns to ride a horse, learns to work with no running water and no electricity, something she never expected when she left her home and had never experienced.   I felt the author really portrayed Lillie as a strong women even though she was well up in her age.  She was quite the character and really helped make the book fun and a good read.

Even though Alice lives in a dream world filled with books and imagination at the beginning of the book, she quickly learns that she wants more in life...purpose and adventure on her own.    The author does an excellant job in bringing about such a change in Alice.   It was neat to learn about the "pack horse library project" that was tremendously successful.   This book has mystery, it has humor, it has historical facts...everything I love in books.

I don't want to give more away however I do have to mention the "bat" incident.   I laughed until I cried because I experienced the exact same thing when we moved to our old Victorian home.   Another book I would HIGHLY recommend to all readers.

UFOS and ODDS and ENDS...

Taking time away from the computer has really helped me refocus and get some UFO's finished. Over the past several days I finally finished a rug mug. I've quilted and bound 3 quilts and I've now finished all the quilt tops that are Christmas gifts. Over the next week or so, I'll quilt them and get the binding on them and then put them in the mail. It feels good to finally be getting some UFO's finished and to have most of my Christmas gifts almost finished.

Along with doing book reviews, I've also read a couple of really good books. Jennifer Chiaverini has a new book out, again just as delightful as all the rest of her books. Sarah's daughter is getting married and throughout the book, Sarah reminisces about other weddings that have taken place with her characters she has written about in her Elm Creek Manor seriies. I really enjoyed this book and for all you Chiaverini's lover's, I know you will too.

I don't normally read these types of books. I'm more of a "fiction" type of girl, although I have been reading a few non-fiction books for my reviews. However when I seen this book I knew I had to read it. This book is very revealing and very thought provoking and because of it, I've now picked up three more non-fiction books on different areas of our world. I will also be ordering more of Farmer's books.

Rick Denton lives his life on his terms. He works hard, plays hard, and answers to no one. So when his mother calls begging him to come home after his stepfather has an aneurysm, Rick is more than a little reluctant. What was supposed to be just a couple days helping out at the family bookstore turns into weeks of cashing out old ladies and dealing with the homeless guy who keeps hanging around the store. The one bright spot is the lovely and intriguing young woman who works at his side each day.

What a wonderful heartwarming Christmas story. I loved this book. From the beginning to the end, it kept me reading. It took me back to the 1980's and I didn't want to put the book down. The characters were strong (even the homeless man) and some very funny, the storyline beautiful and the ending amazing. Even though this book was a Christmas story it was also about reconciliation and I felt Walsh did an amazing job when writing about it. This will be a book I will long remember and will definitely re-read it every year. I HIGHLY recommend it. I will also be on the lookout for more of Walsh's work.

And isn't the cover awesome...wants you to sit right there, enjoying a good book and a hot cup of tea.

Adoption...

I don't often talk about our 3 adoptions on my blog because I feel it's my children's story to tell.   All three have disabilities.   All 3 were adopted in the city we lived in at the time of their adoptions where we had no adoption costs. All three had good health care, had private occupational and speech therapies and they had many, many educational toys.     They were and are much loved.   They've made our family who we are.

Now, think of those with special needs that are on Reece's Rainbow.    They live in orphanages, most without any toys, never mind educational ones and most with no therapies. Once they turn 5 they are tranferred to institutions where they are often drugged, never get enough food and lay in cribs 24/7.    They don't have a family who loves them and gives them everything they need.   How can we, who live in such affluent societies, not do something to help them.    I firmly believe once we know, we have to DO!!

International adoption is costly.   Is it there, NO yet it is what it is.     We all hope at some point that might change.   However for now it's very costly. And so once again, I'm asking for help.    Can you give, even if just a little bit.   Can you forget that latte or that meal you had planned to eat out?    Can you forget about one little gift and instead give to Tomas's Christmas Angel Tree. If so, just click the link and find Tomas's picture (isn't he a cutie).  His picture is on my sidebar. I have to be honest, this was not my favorite book. How does one review a book like this one, I'm not sure. This book did not spark my interest and to be honest, had I not been reviewing it I would not have finished it. I'm sure there are other readers though who would love it. It's a very quick read though, so if you're wanting some light reading you may enjoy it.

The simplicity of Christmas....

Where has it gone?    A wee babe, born in a manger, no room in the inn.   Wrapped in swaddling clothes...being so visual, that gives me such a beautiful picture of simplicity.

And yet...in North America's society I see parents working, working, working to buy their kids more and more.   We rush around at Christmas, wondering if we have the perfect gift, or the toy that's the number one item that particular year.   In many cases, we want to make sure our kids get more than we did as a child.    And so we pile those gifts under the tree.   The malls and stores here are already crowded and it's not even Dec. yet.   I'm sure it's that way in most places.

Recently while shopping, I seen Christmas trees (real) priced at $999.00, artificial ones priced at $499.99.    I seen an ornament....a toilet with Santa sitting in it and when you opened the door you heard a f*rt sound selling for twenty bucks.   Like really, where has the simple Christmas gone?    Yes I know many won't spend that amount on a tree or go crazy at this time of the year, however many will and not think anything of it and then have to work all year to pay off their Christmas debt.

Why do we get sucked in to the consumerism of Christmas?   Why can't we make Christmas what it's truly all about, celebrating the birth of Jesus.   A free gift given to all of us was His birth.

Oh how I long to go back to the simple life where families are more important than buying "stuff", where a simple walk on a starry night with family or friends is so much more than working to buy more.    I long to see society to return to the simple life, where things aren't more important that people.   A longing in my heart, one I've been pondering on for the past several months.   Our own lives are changing...just not quick enough for me!!

Jaime drove up a long lane, using the fence rails to guide her along the snow-covered road.   When she reached the top of the lane, the sight nearly took her breath away.   Before her was a farmhouse glowing with buttery lights, smoke from the chimney rising to the sky.   A cozy, welcoming beacon in the storm.

Suzanne writes such wonderful books about the Amish.    This is a story of a young English woman who is trying to please her father and wanting things, to a young Amish woman who has lost hope and joy through barrenness.   Mattie has put expectations on herself that she believes others want from her and Jaime finds herself at a crossroads in her life, feeling an emptiness in herself she can't understand.

I loved how the author portrayed both woman, Mattie has a gentle, compassionate one and Jaime has the pettulant and whiny one and yet both woman need each other.     Suzanne portrays the men in the book as patient and caring, both strong in their own way.    Another quick and enjoyable read which all will enjoy at this time of the year.

My dream...

Since 2005 my dream has been that every child in the north would have a quilt, hence Quilts for the North. My dream is expanding to Comfort quilts...quilts for every child that comes into foster care in our city (more to come on this). Is the dream big, yes however one quilt at a time for one child at a time.

Andrea Roberts has a dream, that every child on the list at Reece's Rainbow will get a forever family. The time of year has come again when money is being raised to help families adopt these precious children through The Christmas Warrior project. Billions of dollars are spent each Christmas on "STUFF" that many of us never use or even want. My goal is to help Andrea reached her dream. This year, I'm advocating for Thomas who you can see on my sidebar. Would you consider donating a buck or two to his account. Rural switchboard operator Georgie Gail is proud of her independence in a man's world...which makes it twice as vexing when the telephone company sends a man to look over her shoulder.

Dashing Luke Palmer is more than he appears though. He's a Texas Ranger working undercover to infiltrate a notorious gang of train robbers. Repairing telephones and tangling with this tempestuous woman is the last thing he wants to do. But when his stakeout puts Georgie in peril, he realizes more than his job is on the line.

Gist has done it again, making this another fun read with tons of historical facts included. I love that about Deeanne's books. In this book you'll learn about...the bird conservation movement, about Texas Rangers, about rural switchboards and how they operated and about the habitual drunkard's bill. I loved how Gist portrayed Georgie has a independant woman, supporting herself and living alone. She was quite the fiesty lady. It was interesting has well, to read about Brenham and the Maifest celebration.

This book is interesting right from page one until the end and although a love story, I didn't guess the outcome at all. I felt the author did an excellant job when it came to the outcome. This is a fun read that anyone would enjoy.

Working on this...

I've been steadily working on this quilt.   It's not finished yet as there are still more strips with applique to be added to the top and bottom of the quilt.     The pattern is called Current Affair from Shauna Case Quilter's Clutter.   They can be found in Red Deer, Alberta and have a website has well. The number of the pattern is QCL109 for anyone who might want it.

A number of years ago, I seen this same quilt at a quilting store in Manitoba.    The owner of the store ordered the pattern for me and they were out of stock.   Fortunately when this quilt store closed, I happened upon the quilt pattern in a bunch of other patterns and picked it up for a song.    I was thrilled.    There are two patterns in the package.

I've had so much fun working on this quilt.    Some of the applique is done by machine, however all the leaves have been appliqued by hand which I found out I love doing.

A number of months ago I bought a GO which costs me an arm and a leg.   Along with that I had to purchase dies and cutting mats, more money.    Now the Slicer (with their own dies) is out and Sizzex (also with dies) now has a cutter for quilters.   There are charm packs, layer cakes and jelly rolls, all cut to size.   There are new rulers out that do all the math for us quilters. Any gadget imaginable it now out there for us quilters.

Why are most quilters (myself included) falling for all these gadgets.    My GO needs a place to be stores along with all the dies.   Everytime I purchase something new, it needs a place in our home.    Then when it comes to quilting, it has to be hauled out along with needing a place to use it.    What happened to cutting our own strips, cutting our own 5 inch squares?   What happened to having only a few rulers rather than every ruler on the market?

I was so wanting a Slicer to cut ALL my applique until C reminded me with this question "how often will you use those dies?"     It made me stop and think.   I've used my GO ONCE to cut out my SBS.    It sits in my closet, taking up space.   The money I used for the dies and the GO could have went to buying material.

I'm going back to simple quilting, where I cut my own material.    Where I sew the simple patterns, Log Cabin, Jacob's Puzzle, Drunkard's Path or even the Nine Patch.    Will I use my GO?    Yes however I won't be purchasing anymore dies and at some point I'll probably sell it.   Will I get the Slicer I so desparately wanted when I seen it?   ABSOLUTELY NOT!    Will I still make applique quilts or do some of the more difficult patterns.   OF COURSE!!   However it will be done with my own hand.   No longer will I fall for all the gadgets coming out....all we are doing is supporting BIG BUSINESS because they have finally come to the conclusion there is a VERY HOT market with us quilters.    I'm going back to the simplicity of quilting.

I'm not sure why, however getting back into blogging since the passing of my mother has been so very difficult for me. Maybe it's realizing more each day that life is passing us by so very quickly. Just look at where 2011 is. It seems like only yesterday we we're all celebrating a new year. However, I'm finding I'm finally getting back into the groove when it comes to life outside the computer. Throughout life, there are seasons we all go through and I think I've gone through one and am finally coming out on the other side, albeit very slowly.

In the past several weeks I've:
- made most of my Christmas cards
- started on making our Christmas ornaments
- scrapbooked numerous pages
- quilted two quilts and hand delivered last night to two kids
- finished several quilt tops (most of them for Christmas gifts)
- started hand quilting which I've found I absolutely love doing
- continued walking 3 miles most everyday
- lost 24 pounds
- volunteering at the local hospital
- most importantly, gotten back into reading God's word

And so I've given myself permission to blog or go on the internet when I feel I can and when I feel things are still overwhelming, to take a break. I've given myself permission to not feel any guilt, however to enjoy each day as it comes along to the best of my ability.

What an INCREDIBLE book.   I've read every book by Tracie and feel she is one of the best historical authors today.   However, I think this contemporary book is one of her best.   This book is about mental illness and having a family member who so fits Bailee's mother, I felt Tracie did an excellant job in describing the illness so many of us shy away from.    From the very beginning of the book, I could not put the book down.    I so related to the three sisters and could feel their heartache, their anger and even their forgiveness towards their dad. I loved how Peterson brought to the book a stepmom with such a caring heart.   Each character in this book was strong in their own way and portrayed well, even the father and how she showed that fifteen years ago is so different from today when it comes to mental illnesses. This is a book I would HIGHLY recommend.

The simplicity of books...

Books have been a part of my world for years and years. While in grade 2, Mrs. McGee gave me the gift of reading and for that I'm eternally grateful. There is never a day that goes by that there isn't a book in my hand. From a young child and now into my later years, books are gifts that I treasure.

Whether it takes me back to the 17th century or to the depression years, whether it takes me to the civil war or the history of quilting, books are a favorite of mine. I know that Kindles have become popular, however a book in my hand is more to my liking. I love feeling the pages as I turn them, ever wondering what's going to happen. I love looking at the design of the cover, wondering why the author and publishers chose it for that particular book. I love reading the back page even before I read the first page. (Yes I'm weird that way!) I love walking through libaries and seeing the richness that they contain or going through a book store, knowing that there is always a book or two that I will want to purchase. Books come a second close to quilting for me and I find such simplicity in them. I can't imagine a world without them, can you?

Simplicity, the beauty of Fall...

Stepping back from the computer has made me realize I've enjoyed this fall season more than I ever have. Yes there were some black days in Sept. however Oct. has been full of promise. The brilliant reds, the different hues of yellow, the oranges and browns surround me has I walk for miles and miles. Walking along the lake and watching the geese fill their stomachs, preparing for to take flight to their winter homes, watching children at play during these warm fall days before winter sets in, gives me a lift and brightens my days. I'm realizing more and more that simplicity is all about enjoying the present, that dishes can be left in the sink overnight, that I can crawl into an unmade bed every now and then, that the floors don't need to be swept everyday. What a gift simplicity truly is.

My great uncle, who lived to be 104 use to spend hours and hours in his garden from early spring until late fall. Color surrounded him...it wasn't all veggies. He loved flowers, roses and Irises, Sweet Peas and gladiolias, fruit trees because they blossomed in the spring. I always wondered why he loved gardening....now I know, it was all about simplicity and the joy of being outdoors.

After reading Lady in the Mist and loving it, I was so looking forward to reading Eakes second book. I was a little disappointed overall. Although the book had intrigue, spies, espionage and attempted murder, it just didn't draw me in like her other book did. I felt Lydia wasn't a strong character, in fact weak in most cases, succumbing to blackmail without a wimper. I was also a bit confused throughout the book. Although I was disappointed, I will certainly read the second book in this series The Daughters of Bainbridge House. For those who love a spy story, I'm sure they'd probably be okay with this book.

Christmas is just around the corner...

This Christmas will be so different from others.

I won't be able to wish my Mom a Merry Christmas
we will be in our new home
there will only be 3
I won't see my boys

It definitely is going to be different, to say the least. However I'm planning on making it a homemade Christmas as much as possible. Quilts are being made, C and me will make the ornaments for the tree (we sold ours when we moved), and our meal will be small. I'm making all my Christmas cards as well. Instead we will buy gifts to place in Christmas hampers along with a couple turkey. The turkey was on sale a week before our Thankgiving so I bought 4. Although this year will be different, I'm expecting it to be just as good as any other. What are your Christmas plans?

The Civil War has ended, but in Katie Calloway's Georgia home, conflict still rages. To protect herself and her young brother from her violent and unstable husband, she flees north, finding anonymity and sanctuary as the cook in a north woods lumber camp. The camp owner, Robert Foster, wonders if the lovely woman he's hired has the grit to survive the never-ending work and harsh conditions of a remote pine forest in winter. Katie wonders if she can keep her past a secret from a man she is slowly growing to love.

I can hardly wait for this author's next book to come out. I so enjoyed this historical book, which describes the logging business and shanty boys in 1867. It was so different than other historical books which was truly refreshing. I felt the author portrayed Katie has a strong and courageous woman as was Moon Song. Jigger (the camp cook) was quite the character. The author shows both sides of the shanty boys which, to me, makes the book real. I thought Serena brought the readers right into the setting, as I could almost see and feel the northern woods, especially when it came to the Christmas gift. When a fire rages through the forest, I couldn't put the book down to see what the future held for everyone. Another great read that I would highly recommend to anyone.

There area thousand voices telling me who I am, or who I should be.
I want to hear what God has to say. I want to know that he's really there. I want to know that in the whole grand, tangled sweep of the human story, my little story matters. I need to hear His voice, speaking to me, in my own ears...

I received this book with great expectation because this is my greatest desire...to be so close to God I hear Him breathe. I couldn't wait to read a book talking about divine intimacy and I wasn't disappointed.

The book is divided into 5 parts:

The heart of the matter
Creation
The Fall
Redemption
Consummation

My favorite parts were Creation and Redemption. I loved how the author described the Garden of Eden before the fall...it came alive to me. I felt the author did a wonderful job in drawing the readers into the book. I was drawn page after page until I couldn't put the book down. His insights are profound, the stories he shared are beautiful redemption stories and his way with words is simple to read and understand. I loved how he shared his heart. If you are wanting to learn more about intimacy about God, this book is one to read.

A very relaxing week...

I'm so glad I took the week way. I went for long walks, read late into the night and quilted during the day. I played crib numerous times with C, made some plans for the future and relaxed. I thought of my mom lots, however they were good thoughts. I'm thankful I had her in my life for 86 years and although I won't ever stop thinking of her, the days are getting easier. Even though her death was somewhat expected, I didn't realize how difficult it would be.

I made these two quilt tops. The first one is for M, done in greens and beiges. The second one is for J, done in blues and beiges. I know the second one looks long....it ACTUALLY is. J is 6'4" tall and loves to cover his head at night (due to autism). I wanted it long enough to cover his bed (single) and also cover his head. The design came about when I was laying out the centre blocks. That's one thing I love about log cabin quilts, there are numerous layouts. I've now started making a quilts for the two little ones who live next door to us....so fun because it's going to be a surprise for them. I'll also talk about some of my plans later in the week...so fun.

Away for a bit...

The death of my mom hit me harder than I thought and I'm finding I need some time away from my blog. As I struggle with this, I'm finding I'm quilting more and finding peace in the whole process. My mom loved my quilts and always encouraged me whenever we'd talk quilts. It's amazing how quilting reminds me of her.

I'm realizing more and more how precious our time on earth really is. With hubby breaking his ankle, my mom's passing and a cancer scare, it's opened my eyes more than ever so I'm trying to re-evaluate everything. This time away is a time of refreshing for me, a time of drawing closer to those I love and a time to draw ever closer to my Savior. He alone is my strength.

The brilliant colors of fall put a smile on my face and make me fall in love all over again with this beautiful season.

Today I'm thankful for:
- a new month full of promise
- for answered prayers.
- for the shelving unit I purchased for $10 from a quilting store going out of business.   Sad to see another quilting store closing though.
- for the great cabinet I purchased this past week that I will use to store my scraps.   I purchased it at a Bibles mission thrift store, where all the money earned will go to purchase Bibles for China and other Asian countries.   Gotta love when you can support a store that does that.
- for the wonderful Bible study we are doing at our church, all on "gifts".

I hope you are all having a wonderful Sun.

A cancer scare...

On Aug. 30th I went for my first mam*ogram.   The next day I was called to do another view.   They weren't satisfied with that, they wanted to do an ultrasound.    As the radiologist read the ultrasound, he informed me that the mam*ogram was showing a spot.   He wanted to speak to two other radiologists and would inform me what they wanted to do, probably a biopsy.

Sept. 5 my mother passed away.
Sept. 6 hubby broke his ankle.
Sept. 6 they called to tell me that yes, I was to have a biopsy and when.

It was not a good week or month for that matter.   Waiting was not easy and yet I have a very strong faith.   I leaned on Him throughout the days and as always He alone carried me through.  We prayed, others prayed and I sang over and over again Michael W. Smith's song.... Healing Rain. On Sept. 21st I had the biopsy, not a easy thing to go through.    Wed. of this week I got my reports back....NO CANCER.   Only God!!
I've always been told mam*ograms weren't nice.   And no they aren't however I've been through worse.    Ladies, please if you haven't had one, have one.    It could be a life saver.     Now when I'm scheduled to have one, I'll definitely have one.   No more putting off!!

Book review...

You're strong.   You're responsible.   You're good. But...
as day fades to dark, you begin to feel the familiar fog of anxiety, the weight and pressure of holding it together and of longing left unmet.   Good girls sometimes feel that the Christian life means doing hard work with a sweet disposition.   We tend to focus only on the things we can handle, our disciplined lives, and our unshakable good moods.   But what would happen if we let grace pour out boundless acceptance into our wornout hearts and undo us?   If we dared to talk about the ways we hide, our longing to be known, and the fear in the knowing?

This book is for those women who wear masks, who fear rejection, who believe they have to perform for God in order to earn His acceptance or those who feel they need to perform to prove their worth.   I felt that the book could be for both good girls and those not so good.   It's a book about learning to trust God rather than always pleasing Him.

I especially enjoyed part 2 and 3 of the book.    I felt the author did a great job in sharing her heart when it came to the struggles she went and still goes through. Log Cabin quilts...

I've been busy making Log Cabin blocks.   I've made 24 of these, in beiges and greens.  I've also started making another 32, in beiges and blues.    Both quilts are Christmas gifts, one to M and one to J.   (I miss my boys terribly.)   All my strips are cut for the blue and beiges so it should go quickly to sew the 32 blocks.    I'll then sew the blocks together for each quilt.   These blocks are being made with stash I have on hand.
I love the Log Cabin quilts.   There are so many layout designs when putting the blocks together.   Someone sent me an e-mail saying they could never get their strips to be straight, thus not having a square block.   Here are a few tips I've learnt throughout the years making these.
- make sure you are using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.   It's imperative that you do.   If you struggle with the 1/4 inch, sew slowly until you get more confidence.
- square each time you sew a strip, especially at the beginning. My strips are 1 1/2 inch strips, so once the first two strips are sewn on, it should measure a 2 1/2 inch square.   I continue to square each time I've sewn two strips on.   If you do this right at the beginning, and each time afterward you'll usually get a square block when it's finished.
- square the block once it's finished.    These blocks are 11 1/2 inch blocks.   I use my 15 inch square ruler (a MUST have when quilting in my books).

I loved Jody's book The Preacher's Bride and once again I loved this book. This book was inspired by the true story of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, young missionaries who traveled overland to Oregon in 1836. Narcissa along with Eliza Spalding were the first women to travel to the west. As Hedlund portrays Narcissa as Priscilla in this story, I felt she did a awesome job. She showed us Priscilla's strengths and courage, yet also showed us her many weaknesses which especially impressed me. Through every struggle, from prickly pears, bad river crossings, poor food rations and even cholera, Priscilla learns what it means to follow God's calling, that of being a missionary. I loved how the author showed Mabel's deep abiding faith even when she knew her husband cares for another. The friendship between the two ladies was delightful. Eli's character was strong throughout, Henry's not so much and yet at the end, Henry gives Priscilla a precious gift (can't say..don't want to spoil the book for anyone). This is a wonderful historical fiction book that I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone. I can't wait for Jody's next book.

Thankful Sunday...

The month is almost over, fall has arrived with color bursting forth as we watch the leaves change.   Today I'm thankful for:
- that our van is still running even at 300,000 kms.
- for the apples we got off our apple tree.   I sliced and froze up a bunch and gave the neighbours a huge bag full.   I'm thankful that C was able to get them off the tree seeing as dh can't with his cast.    She loved doing it.   There isn't much she won't tackle.   I'm thankful for her willing heart!!
- that the month of Sept. is almost over.   It's been one of the hardest months I've experienced in a long time.
- that my family loves baked beans.   Such a frugal meal.
- for Toonie Thurs. at our scrapbooking store.   C and me have such fun making cards.
- for our scrapbooking club.   C won the first draw and received $140.00 gc to purchase scrapbooking supplies.   She's already spend most of it.

Color me black again...

Another Sat. meaning once again it's the Rainbow Challenge. Remember my color me black post

here. Here is the continuation of that quilt. This block is 14 1/2 inches square. I had to make 8 of the star blocks (without the Log Cabin strips) and one of these blocks. The centres of each block will have applique done in them. I'm putting this quilt aside for a bit until I finish some other quilts I'm working on. I might be back to this one before Christmas, I'm not sure yet. I can't wait to see what color we get for Oct..I'm suspecting orange, my least favorite color.

How I do it...

I thought I'd tell you how I get so much quilting done.
- when I purchase material I wash it as soon as I get home.   I dry it, press and fold so it's all ready to go when I want to quilt.   I have it all color co-ordinated so when I want a specific color I'm not looking through all my material to find it.
- when I find a pattern I want to make, I cut EVERYTHING out BEFORE I start to quilt.   I'll take a day just to cut and have everything ready.    When I have some extra time I can just go to my sewing machine and quilt, even if it's only 5 mins.   It's all ready for me.
- I always have thread on hand so I'm not running out and have to make a trip to the store.   It takes time if you have to stop and run.   So much more convenient if it's already on hand.
- I usually pick easy patterns so the quilts can be made up quickly.
- I have a very small home so it doesn't take long to clean it.   I've gotten way more organized since living small.   I make a list of everything I have to do each day.
- I've organized my sewing supplies so I only have to look in one place to find what I need.
- I make time to quilt everyday.   It's a part of who I am.
- I usually have more than one quilt on the go at any one time.   I never get bored quilting.

So all day yesterday I cut strips to make 2 Log Cabin Quilts for Christmas gifts.   After some medical tests today, I will start sewing.   All will be ready.

First off I have to say that Bethany House has outdone themselves on the cover of this book. Of all the books I've read this year I have to say this one is the absolute best in my opinion.

Tracie and Judith are two of my favorite authors and when they author a book together, the books are brilliant. They've done it again!! Right from the start of this book I was drawn in, especially by the character of Aunt Thora. What a fiesty lady she was...I was chuckling right from the very beginning. I thought the author's portrayed her character wonderfullly. I love it when author's have a "surprise" character in a book and Thora was definitely one of them, along with others.

Tracie and Judith did an excellant job of showing how we often jump to conclusions before we know the real truth. They also showed how alcoholism can affect family members...especially the lack of trust that continues throughout their lives. Even though Audrey's father was an alcoholic and had quit drinking, she still showed tenancity when it came to protecting her father. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone.

Thankful Sunday...

As the leaves start turning their beautiful colors and fall arrives in a few short days, I'm thankful for:

- that this week was easier than last week.
- That my walks have gotten longer and longer each day.   We are now up to 2.4 miles a day and hopefully by the end of next week, up to 2.76 miles a day.   It feels so good to walk.
- that I've found my strength these past days in the One who is there through it all, my Savior Jesus Christ.   Without Him, I'm not sure I would have made it.
- that there was no one in the mobile home that burnt down last night.   I'm thankful for the firemen who fight fires and such quick responses from them.   I'm thankful for those who drive ambulances and although they weren't needed last night, they were there too.    It's a huge loss for a family, yet everyone is safe.
- that I've been able to get lots of quilting done these past few days.   I need to, have umpteen quilts to make before Christmas.

I hope you are all enjoying beautiful fall days.

Color me black...

Here we are, Saturday and Rainbow challenge time. The color this month is black which has me really excited because I have a pattern that calls for 8 of these Log Cabin blocks (along with other blocks). I dug out my scraps and have 8 of these done now. Although I will finish the 8 blocks and do a number of other blocks, this is one quilt that won't get finished this year (at least I don't think so). There is some applique on it and I have so many quilting projects on the go now that I think I'll wait to finish it in the new year. We shall see. I had to make a slight adjustment to this block...I didn't have any extra black on white so one strip is WOW. I'm working at not purchasing anymore material until the new year so have done it this way instead. Now I'm off to make the star blocks, using black and white of course.

Cutting with my GO...

Many of you don't know what a GO is. You can read about it here. I bought one in the spring and never got around to using it, simply because of our renovations and subsequent move. (For those of you who scrapbook and have a Cuttlebug, it's very similar to that.)

Finally, C and me decided to start using it this past weekend. We both cut out Sun Bonnet Sue's using the Sun Bonnet Sue die. WOW does it do slick work. You can cut out 5 Sun Bonnet Sues at a time which makes for very quick cutting. Here is the first block I've sewn up. C is way ahead of me in the sewing department as she has way more sewn than I do.

This is not a cheap machine nor are the dies cheap. Yet it sure makes my life easier when it comes to cutting. We are now watching for sales on the dies that are coming out. Just as in scrapbooking, more and more new toys are being put on the market for quilters. I'm not sure how many I will purchase, however I'm certainly glad I changed my mind and bought this toy.

Scatty Stars #2...Christmas quilt-along

After making the first set of blocks for the Scatty Stars quilt, I decided to make one in Christmas fabrics. Here is the end result. I made the border a wee bit different because I've set a goal of not purchasing anymore material (other than WOW) until the new year. I finished it yesterday. I really enjoyed doing this one because I knew the outcome after having done the first one. I may end up making another one, however if I do I plan on making it larger. BTW...most of the material used in this quilt was material that were in the $5.00 bags I bought a few months ago.

Remember this funny looking picture of my Christmas quilt-along quilt here. This is what it looks like finished. I think it was brilliant how we ended up cutting it to make it into a quilt. Although this was a quilt I wanted to throw out (especially before we cut it), I'm really liking how it all turned out. Now I'll finish the other one that I did with Christmas material. --This is a new author for me.   I found the book to be a fun read, although a bit predictable.   Rebekah is a strong character in the book though I loved little Ollie.   She had such spunk which really draws the reader to her.   I definitely chuckled a couple of times, especially during the driving incident.   One of my favorite parts in the book was the Christmas scene...I felt the author did a superb job when it came to how Rebekah felt in regards to the decisions she had to make then.    This is definitely a book about growing up and letting go of the dreams you've had for years.    I felt Anne did an excellant job showing us that throughout the book.   I'd definitely recommend this book.

Thankful Sunday....

It's been a week I want to forget.   Not only did my Mother pass away, the day after my hubby broke his ankle.

- thank you to all the wonderful words left in comments on the death of my mother.   It meant the world to me.    The days haven't been easy this past week, yet I will treasure those words forever.
- that hubby was able to get to see our family physician 1/2 hour after he broke his ankle.
- that appointments for me have already been made.    I'm thankful that I'm in a province that does things quickly and I don't have to wait months to get tests done.
- for the fun Love Lethbridge barbeque C and me attended yesterday.   It was fun to hear Jason Zerban sing.   He is awesome!!
- for my best friend H.   She is one of a kind, always there for me through all the ups and downs of life.   H you are a treasure!!

I'm so glad that Debbie is writing non-fiction books. I've read them all and have thoroughly enjoyed each one, this one no exception. She writes about her faith in such simple words, words that encourage us all to live a better life. I highly recommend this book. She is also now authoring cookbooks which should be fun reads. I can't wait to read her next fiction book too.

Like mother...like daughter..

C fell in love with batiks and is now hooked on quilting. She found this pattern in the book Twisted Classics which I posted below her quilt top that she wanted to make. It's not an easy pattern however I encouraged her to make it if that's what she wanted to do. She did is all on her own. The only thing I did was give her little tips along the way. She is so excited that the top is finished. I'll now quilt it for her this coming fall. C, I'm so proud of the work you've done on this quilt...an amazing job!! Even I wouldn't have tackled this quilt.

For anyone who wants a great quilting book, this one is awesome. There are a number of quilts in the book I'd eventually love to do.

A broken heart...

The beginning of a new month with a number of changes coming once again for me.    I can't go into detail right now, however I would ask you to pray.
Today I'm thankful for:
- for the wonderful feeling of touching someone's life (who has cancer) with a quilt.   I won't go into detail here has it was very private, yet I can say it was a very moving experience for me with lots of tears.  I can also say she had always wanted a homemade quilt.   Anyone can do this...stepping out is not easy and yet, think of how we can touch someone's life.
- for doctor's who care.
- for the city we live in.   I love it here...the incredible beauty of this city amazes me.    No matter where you go, you are surrounded with nature.    It's awesome!!
- for 3 good libraries.   What would we do without them.   They truly are a treasure trove.
- that C finished the top of her quilt.   I'll see if I can post a picture this coming week.   She did a great job of a very hard pattern.

Our miracle working God...

A little orphan girl, given a mommy and daddy months ago, brought to the States and loved by many. A surgery today that proves our God is in the miracle working business and answers prayers. He does, he does!!!

For the love of batiks...

Rember this quilt that was done in pastel colors. I so enjoyed making it that I decided to do it in batiks which I love working with. Here is one of the blocks that I finished yesterday. I have all the squares cut out and all the half squares done. I just need to put them all together.

I love batiks. It doesn't matter what side you use so you decide which side has the most brilliant color. You do need to use a special sewing needle for batiks however it's like sewing any other material. I'm also reading a great book titled Surrender the Heart by MaryLu Tyndall. So trying to get some quilting done is sort of on the back burner. The book is a page turner and not one I want to put down. I'm not sure who this quilt will be going to. I'll just put it all together and wait for that still small voice to direct me. The last experience was incredible.

I felt the stories shared were wonderful stories that helped explain how the Amish live. Their values were truly shown throughout the book. I'd recommend this book to anyone, especially to those who are wanting a simpler lifestyle.

Thankful Sunday...

Here we are, the last Sun. of August.   It seems like August came and went in a heartbeat, don't you think?   I can't imagine where the days went.

Today I'm thankful for:
- blogging friends and the fact that Blogger is free.    I look at what the blogging world has done when it comes to internation adoptions, when it comes to helping those who have a sick child, etc.   It's amazing and awesome and I love it!!
- for the long walks we take every night in the park.   I love seeing the seagulls scoop down for their food, the the water fountain that lights up at night and seeing the children outside playing in the park.   Does my heart good.
- that our soon to be born grandson is healthy.   There was a concern for a bit, however God heard our prayers.
- for my new folding table.    The cost at St*ples was $72.00.   Regular price at Cdn. Tire was $55.95, however the sale price this week was $42.95.   It works perfectly for pinning large quilts.
- that today I will get to visit with a stranger and give her a quilt.    I'm thankful God gave me the courge to find out her name and her phone number.    It definitely isn't me!!

2011 Rainbow Challenge...

This is the last Sat. of the month for white in the Rainbow challenge. This quilt pattern is titled Mill Girls and found in Jennifer Chiaverini's quilting book "More Elm Creek Quilts". I loved doing this quilt, so much so that I'm going to be making another one, using whites and batiks. I've already bought the batiks and have the white, so will start cutting out next week. This quilt will be going to a lady who has cancer whom I see every Sat. at the Farmer's Market. It's all quilted and I'm heading out tomorrow to deliver the quilt. This will be a first for me...delivering it personally to someone I don't know. It should make for a very interesting visit, however I can't wait. (All the other quilts I donated to charity were delivered by other people or sent in the mail.)

Miss Fannie Rousseau is a young woman of privilege traveling west to uncover the truth behind a family secret. Mr. Samuel Beck is on a mission to atone for past failures that still haunt him.
Their meeting aboard a steamboat to Montana sparks an unlikely attraction. They are opposites in every way...except in how neither one can stop thinking of the other. Will the end of the journey bring the end of their relationship, or is is just the beginning.

Once again, Stephanie has outdone herself. There hasn't been a book of hers that I've read and not enjoyed. Young Fannie finds herself on a passage to Fort Benton after her parents have died to find an aunt she never knew existed. She is beautiful, kind and honest. While on board ship, she meets up with Samuel who is searching for his sister. I felt that the author did a really swell job of showing us how mentorship can truly work with Sam and Larmar. I thoroughly enjoyed Larmar's character. My only disappointment in the book...I would have loved to have seen more of Hannah's mentorship, although Fannie certainly became a mature and strong woman on her own. I also felt Whitson did an excellant job of hiding the truth when it came to Edie. A great read!! I highly recommend this book.

Ponderings...when is enough, enough

I've been pondering this over the past couple of days.   When is enough, enough.   Living in a very rich province, I see million dollar homes, large motorhomes, large vehicles.  Last summer I seen million dollar cabins on the lake in B.C.. I look at my own life and I see more material than I need, more food in my cupboards than most people have in this world.    When is enough, enough when it comes to the hours one works so that they can spend, spend, spend. Have you even thought about that?

I keep asking myself this question as I see the pictures of famine in Africa, when I see the faces of those little ones that are in institutions on Reece's Rainbow, when I see a street person walking downtown in my city.   When is enough, enough when there are those going without, little ones without a toy to play with or when precious kids like this are starving to death.   We have so much!!
When will we ever learn to be content...to give more than we spend on ourselves.   When will we ever see the needs of others more than we see the wants of ourselves.    My prayer is that God would teach me to be content with what I have and not to want more than I need.

Book review...

Julia Gilliland has always been interested in the natural world around her.   She particularly enjoys studying the fossils and formations in the magnificent cave near her father's house.   The cave seems plenty safe--until the day a mysterious intruder steals the rope she uses to climb out.
Rafe Kincaid is a man used to being in control--of himself, his brothers, and his family's ranch.   The last thing he expects is to find a woman trapped in the cavern on his land--or to be forced to kiss her!
Rafe is more intrigued by Julia than any woman he's ever known.   But when their developing relationship threatens a reconciation with his brothers, will Rafe have to choose between his family and this new love that could heal his troubled heart and secure his happiness?

The sparks that fly between two very strong willed people who each want control in everything they do, made this book a fun read. I thought both main characters had very strong personalities and putting the two of them together was brilliant. This book had me chuckling throughout, especially when it came to the fiery redhead and Rafe. She definitely wanted control as did he.    I thoroughly enjoyed how the author made Julia a lover of fossils (it's always been an interest in our family). This is definitely a book about succeeding in order to prove a Father's love. I can't wait to read the second book in this series Into the Deep where I believe Rafe's middle brother will become much more mature than he seemed to be in this book.    I definitely would recommend this book.

- that Adeye's blog raised over $23,000 for this precious life  and she now has a family committed to her. Please pray for these precious children who languish away in orphanages.   It breaks my heart.
- the awesome beauty of lightening.    We love watching from our windows.
- for fun card games played late into the night
- that hubby finished building the two back steps, all with lumber on sale at $2 a board.   Gotta love Tot*m stores!!
- that our van continues working even though it's closing in on 300,000 kms.

2011 Rainbow Challenge...

I've missed doing the Rainbow Challenge for the past couple of months. However I've started again. The color this month is white. Now everyone that knows me knows that I use white a lot. I love how the other colors "pop" out when white is used.

I've read all of Jennifer Chiaverini's books. Not only has she written fiction, she has a number of quilt books out (all as good as her fiction books). I found More Elm Creek Quilts and fell in love with this pattern titled Mill Girls and decided to make it with scraps of material that I had purchased when I bought the $5 dollar bags of scraps. I'm loving how it is turning out. I have all 20 blocks done and should have the quilt together by next Sat.

This book has it all....romance, history, intrigue and a spy. It's the type of book I thoroughly enjoy, in fact so much I've ordered her two other books. Frantz does an awesome job of portraying a young woman who is penniless and yet shows the reader how determined this young lady is to make a better life for all around her even though she is in dire straights. I thought both Roxanna and Bella were strong characters throughout the book as was the Colonel. It truly is a love story and yet it's also a story about forgiveness. Frantz is so adept at showing us the frontier life...her words make the reader feel like they are right there. I'd highly recommend this book.

Small space living, part 2....

Last week I showed you where I store my material. Today I'm showing you my small space for quilting. This is the west wall of our living room. We only have a couch and a small reclining chair in our living room. Because I no longer have a sewing room, this small area has become my sewing area. There is a large bay window in our living room, along with a west window just over top of my sewing table. It gives me perfect lighting. Again although not the best, it's working PERFECTLY for me. In order to pin my quilts, I will have to purchase a larger folding table which I will store (when folded) behind my couch. More to come on small space living!!

As the sun shines brightly and the winds blow softly on this beautiful Aug. day, I'm thankful for:

- the great yard sale finds yesterday...an like new excersise bike for $10, 6 metres of Jenny Beyer material for $3 and a glass snowman for $2. Hubby got a stand for his table saw for $5.
- for the incredibly beautiful weather we are having.
- being able to walk without mosquitoes biting. For the walking paths here in our city.
- organic chicken...yummie!!
- for God's word
- for my bread maker. We can have fresh bread even on hot summer days.

Christmas quilt-along...

Here we are once again doing our Christmas Quilt-along. I was so far behind, having not been quilting for awhile along with having my quilting material packed. So I've worked the past couple days getting caught up. I'm now up to date with these.

Then I thought, this is a Christmas quilt-along. Why not use some of the scrappy pieces of Christmas material I had. So along with finishing the blue blocks I worked on getting all the blocks done up using Christmas material. Now I need to get to work and get caught up with my Civil War blocks!!

Small space living...

One wonders how one can go from 1500 sq. ft. living to 872 sq. ft. living especially when one is a quilter. This is how I've done it. We have a 8x8 sq. ft. porch which is insulated and heated. I bought these two shelving units (with doors) for $39.98 (Cdn.) on sale. I wasn't sure where I was going to put them until I realized I didn't have anywhere to put them, other than in our porch. They fit perfectly and now my quilting materials are stored in them.

I'm not an organized person, however small space living has made me realize I need to be super organized or otherwise my life will be completely chaotic. It's not how I want to live, so organized I've become. All my material is now color co-ordinated and in the left hand cupboard. I will not be purchasing anymore material (except wow) until I've used most of this material up or unless I can find some good sales. The bottom shelf stores my GO dies.

The right hand unit stores my quilt tops waiting to be quilted, my 2 1/2 inch strips, my WOW and my flanellette. It's not the best solution as I would like to have my own sewing room with everything together. However it's now the PERFECT solution for me. Next week, I'll show you my sewing area.
